Perhaps you recently went out and decided to buy a bird feeder, and you came home and hung it in your yard, and you sat and waited for birds to come! Or, perhaps you found that old bird feeder in the shed or in the attic, and you cleaned it and hung it up so you could watch the birds through the window. If you have just put your bird feeder up, you might be disappointed, wondering why no birds are feeding! Patience is key if you have recently hung a bird feeder, because birds can wait a while before realizing a feeder is there, and they can wait even longer before they decide it is safe. Bird feeders are also most likely to attract birds if you hang them in the winter, when food is scarce. But not to worry; you can still attract birds even if you hang your feeder when food is plentiful. Here are a few things you can do.

One of the best things you can do to attract birds is to hang it near a bird bath. Of course, you might not have a bird bath; if this is the case, consider purchasing one. Birds always like to keep themselves clean, and this is even more the case right after they have eaten. If you give them the opportunity to take care of everything in one stop, they will start stopping by more often.

Another thing that is important for attracting birds is making sure that your bird feeder is not too close to a window. While you will certainly want to keep it in a place that will allow you to watch the birds through the window, you are sure to be disappointed if you put it too close to the window, as it might take ages for birds to begin visiting it.

Lastly, you have to keep in mind the fact that birds want to feel safe. A bird feeder too close to the ground, out in the open, is probably not a good idea. A great way to hang your feeder is from a branch, so that the birds can sit safely in the tree and drop down for some food. Give them a safe area such as this, and they are sure to start visiting!

Your bird feeder will not be very fun or entertaining if it has no birds at it. You can get birds to start visiting you, and visiting you soon, if you just follow these simple tips!
